Interview with the head of KRAFTTRANS Dmitry Gannota

09.04.2018

DMITRY GANNOTA:
«LIES AND LAZINESS ARE UNACCEPTABLE IN THE TEAM, WITH THE REST IT’S POSSIBLE TO COPE»

Behind every successful business there’s a man, who was able to unite team of professionals, ignite them with his idea and determine ways of company’s development. Each of them has his own history, destiny and measurements of success. A “star-team” is better than a “team of stars”, how ideas are emerged and why it’s important to prioritize things correctly,” Dmitry Vladimirovich Gannota tells, the head of KRAFTTRANS.

  • Dmitry Vladimirovich, you built a successful company. In your opinion, what qualities should a person have to achieve success in business? And which of them are crucial?
  • There is no single and unique quality that will lead a business man or his company to success. Everything is simpler and... much more complicated. As a business man you need to have a set of specific qualities and competencies to achieve certain goals in every particular case.
What should be included in this set depends on the markets the company operates in, company’s size and specifics of the business, country’s cultural habits and much more.
In addition, according to the methodology of Ichak Adizes, in any business there’s should be a certain set of functions: entrepreneurial, integrating, administrative and achieving goals. A real leader should have the same characteristics. It’ll be ideal, if he has all of them. No doubt, the company with a strong team of properly selected professionals and well-developed functions has the greatest chances to achieve success

  • What concerns your team, how did you assemble it? Which qualities in people do you value and encourage?
  • We actively use the methodology of Adizes in our work. When we set goals and determine the company’s tasks, we immediately consider the corresponding structure to achieve these goals. And according to the structure’s framework we form a team.
One of the most important factors in team’s creation is a psychological aspect. People should hear, feel, understand and supplement each other. And everyone should understand and accept his assigned role. When the team works not interfering but helping each other, the probability of success is greatly increased. Iceland's football team (less populated country in comparison to any region of Belarus!) reached the quarter-final of the World Cup. This is the clearest example how an organically close-knit team can solve problems and achieve sky-high goals.
Lies and laziness are unacceptable in the team, with the rest it’s possible to cope; competence, knowledge and experience can be acquired. But if a person is pathologically lazy and ready to deceive his teammates, who’s also has no inner motivation to move on; then communications collapse inside in the team, mutual respect and trust are lost. As a result, the team breaks up.
  • Do you think cohesion and interchangeability in a team is more important than having “stars” in it?
  • No one denies the role of personality in history. But I believe in a teamwork more. When one star works, the result is unpredictable. There can be or can not be a result in the end. Do you remember when the Russian hockey team collected all the “stars” and failed at domestic World Championship?

«AWARENESS THAT YOUR ACTIVITIES ARE TURNING INTO THE GLOBAL RESULT BUILDS CONFIDENCE IN YOUR STRENGTH, TEAM AND COMPANY IN THE WHOLE»
  • How can thousands of people with their own interests and priorities in life team up with a single goal?
  • It’s unlikely to achieve that in a large company. For example, in 2018 Apple is slated to reach a market capitalization of $1 trillion. I doubt that an employee who works as a cleaner in the office thinks about this goal or waits for a quarterly report to figure out whether the company is moving towards this trillion. It’s important the main goal to be divided into little goals and tasks. People with a certain set of competencies will aim to achieve them. Awareness that your activities are turning into the global result builds confidence in your strength, team and company in the whole. And it gives people satisfaction from being contributed to the solution of a global task.

  • Business is a constant development, improvement and innovation. How do you generate ideas and “light up” other people with them?
  • Effective methods that allow you to generate ideas do not exist. You can not just download a mobile app and complete ten levels to generate a bunch of ideas that will lead your enterprise to market leaders.
The birth of new ideas, as a rule, involves analysis. There is a market, demand, competition, company’s strategy... You generate ideas by analyzing all of this and trying to find a solution to achieve company's goals. And the more interesting and non-standard they are, the better and greater results they’ll bring. It’s very important that the leader’s ideas are accepted by the team. If you just say “do it” – it won’t work. The leader should be a person who knows how to present the idea correctly and explain it logically, so that this idea can be supported and accepted by teammates. It’s great when the team members start to generate ideas and come to top managers with their own proposals which will reflect in specific decisions within the company.
«DELIBERATE RISK IS A MOVEMENT FORWARD, AND CREATIVE IS A NECESSITY»
  • Businessmen quite often have to make decisions based on a limited data set, taking risks and guiding by the well-known “sixth sense”. So do you like taking risks?
  • I do not believe in entrepreneurial “sixth sense”. Well, imagine: a hunter comes to a hunt and fires in the bushes, relying on his hunting “sixth sense”. How can all of this end? It can be an accident. In business everything is much more complicated and even more unpredictable. Such “shooting in the bushes” can ruin the whole business. You’re not allowed to do anything without having any information at all.

«AWARENESS THAT YOUR ACTIVITIES ARE TURNING INTO THE GLOBAL RESULT BUILDS CONFIDENCE IN YOUR STRENGTH, TEAM AND COMPANY IN THE WHOLE»

If an entrepreneur came up with an idea, then there had been prerequisites for this and he’d owned certain information based on the analysis. Perhaps he’d found a free market niche or growing demand for a product.
Based on this, you can make the first step. Then you can start thinking about the next stage and formation of a project... Or you can even decide to close the project. At the same time, we understand there’s no guarantee of payback of these initial investments. This is an entrepreneurial risk. It means that time, money and efforts, you invest in a new project, may not bring a desired result.
  • Do you have a personal mission? What would you like to give to the world?
  • They say, every man should plant a tree, build a house and raise a son. I have four children, and for me it is important to grow them up healthy and happy. I want people in the company to enjoy their work. Also I’d like our clients and partners to enjoy working with us. We want to be the best in the market in our field!
There are no global issues related to changing the world in front of the company and me, personally, for the next two years.
But seriously, I believe we can all change the world if everyone strives for more.
